Digital Artifact Project - Century of War
Korean War
(1950-1953)
- Under US leadership, United Nations joined with South Korea to combat North Korean, Chinese, and Soviet Union forces.
- The Battle of Inchon (1950), an amphibious assault, was a success for the UN force, and turned around loses incurred by the South Korean military.
- South Korea regained lost land by the end of September 1950.
- This war is said to have created a new era in Aerial warfare:
- Jet aircraft were used in air-to-air combat (dogfights) for the first time in history. This gave way to American P-80's and Soviet MiG-15s.
- Over the next few years, small skirmishes led to small gains on either side: a stalemate.
- On July 27, 1953, the United Nations signed an Armistice, which ceased military conflict for the time being. A formal peace treaty was never signed.
- The United States and Republic of Korea signed a mutual defense treaty.
