Digital Artifact Project - Century of War
World War II Strategy
- Soon after entering the war, the US concentrated on Germany. The US Navy's Pacific Fleet was focused on containing Japanese expansion.
- Roosevelt felt German scientists posed a bigger threat than the Japanese expansion.
- US military leaders favored a far more aggresive approach to attacking Germany than the British
- Allies would begin bombing German cities and munitions depots.
- In October 1942, the Allies would attack the Nazi's weakest points: Africa.
- Once Africa was secure, the invasions of Italy would begin. Mussolini was arrested and Italy surrendered to the Allies on September 8, 1943.
- Then, on June 6, 1944, D-Day; the Normandy landings, began. By nightfall, a landing had been secured. German resistance was numbered following the Allies successfull landing of Europe.
Warfare Advancements:
- With more airplane advances, dogfights were now more prominant over European cities. Radar, and air-to-air missles were created during the time of WWII.
- With ships becoming larger in size, naval firepower was essential. Now, airplanes were being launched off ships, and the mounted naval guns were much larger than in WWI.
- On ground warfare, the forces were fighting each other from farther distances, compared to WWI. This can be attriuted to gun, and tank improvements.
